CELLS Week 2

Week of July 30, 2012 – August 4, 2012 Text book 20-29

Our Target:  I can label parts of an animal cell and plant cell.  I can discuss the functions of plant and animal cells.

Vocabulary: organism, cell, unicellular, multicellular, chlorophyll, tissue, organ, organ system, skeletal system, muscular system, digestive system nervous system

Activity 1: Cell drawing and labeling of plant and animal cells

Activity 2: Cell project- Create edible plant or animal cell with all labeled parts

NUTRITIONAL RELATIONSHIPS IN THE ECOSYSTEM- Week 3

Week of August 6, 2012 – August 10, 2012 Text book 140- 165

Our Target: I can explain how populations compete and are limited by the resources they need.

Vocabulary: food chain, food web, energy pyramid, community, population, mutualism, commensalism, parasitism, symbiosis, producer, consumer, parasite, ecosystem, predator, prey, habitat, niche, carrying capacity, limiting factor

Activity 1: Create a food web or food chain using magazine photos for example grass, rabbit, snake. Be creative!

Activity 2: Have students to create a trifold of the symbiosis relationships (commensalism, mutualism, parasitism)

PHOTOSYNTHESIS- Week 4

Week of August 13, 2012 – August 17, 2012 Text book 46- 59

Our Target: I can discuss the process by which leaves carry out photosynthesis.

Vocabulary: xylem, phloem, photosynthesis, transpiration, cellular respiration

Activity 1-  Explore activity pg. 47 (number of leaves affect transport of water)

Activity 2- plant experiment using both materials for photosynthesis and non materials.

CHANGES IN THE ECOSYSTEM- Week 5

Week of August 20, 2012 – August 24, 2012 Text book 194- 205  Water cycle 184- 185, 190 (compost)

Our Target: I can compare and contrast human activities and natural disasters and their impact on the environment.

Vocabulary: water cycle, evaporation, condensation, precipitation, run off, ground water, compost, extinct species, endangered species, threatened species,

(brief definitions- succession, primary succession, pioneer species, pioneer, community, climax community, secondary succession).

Activity 1- Compost creation for school garden
